Kids Ages 3-5 Are Learning Chess in Ashland MA

Are you looking for a fun, active, and educational activity for your 3-, 4-, or 5-year-old? We have the solution. Our Chess for Tots program gives young children an exciting way to build focus, confidence, and early problem-solving skills—while having a great time.

What Makes Chess for Tots Different?

At Future Masters Chess Academy, located at 200 Homer Ave., Ashland, MA 01721, children don’t just sit and learn chess—they become part of the game. Each child wears a chess hat, steps onto our large floor chess mat, and moves like the pieces they are learning about.

Parents can relax and watch the class from our spacious welcome room, named after chess legend Judit Polgár who has a popular documentary on Netflix about her story. She learned chess right out of the womb. Her story is fascinating. The experience is lively, visual, and hands-on—perfect for young learners who need movement, imagination, and play to stay engaged.

Designed for Young Attention Spans

Normally children aged 3 to 5 have a hard time listening and staying still. Studies show that kids this age can only focus three times their age in minutes. So, we are talking only nine to fifteen minutes of attention span. However, our Chess for Tots program has been scientifically designed so that the kids are focusing for the entire 30-minutes class. Some kids even do a double class and focus for one hour. S our program has increased the focus three and four times more than average.

Children ages 3 to 5 naturally learn best when they are moving, exploring, and using their imaginations. That is why Chess for Tots is structured around active learning instead of long periods of sitting still.

Our program is built to keep young children engaged while helping them develop early chess understanding, pattern recognition, and decision-making skills. By standing on the board, moving like the pieces, and thinking about their next step, children begin to connect movement with strategy in a memorable way.

Building Focus, Creativity, and Critical Thinking

Our chess classes, lessons, and tournaments help children practice critical thinking in a creative, imaginative, and joyful environment. As they move around the board and make decisions like chess pieces, they learn to pause, observe, plan, and choose their next move. We find that this mental discipline extends to their everyday life and school according to our parents. We find that it even improves behavioral problems, such as lack of focus, speaking out of turn, lack of discipline and just general irritability.

Why Introduce Chess Early?

We believe every child should have the chance to experience chess. Because chess is built on patterns, movement, memory, and choice, children can begin learning the game even before they can read.

It is remarkable to see how quickly children respond to chess pieces, especially life-size pieces that make the game feel approachable and exciting. Some 3- and 4-year-olds even begin challenging—and beating—their parents at home.

Chess Is Growing Everywhere

The growing popularity of chess shows how powerful and appealing the game can be for learners of all ages. Duolingo launched a chess course in 2025 as one of their language programs and it is now to their surprise their fastest growing program by far. There are now over 7 millions daily active chess users on Duolingo.

Our company, Future Masters Chess Academy, told Duolingo something they had not realized. It is that their company could become the biggest chess advertisers in the world. It is because they like us are appealing to the youngest of minds by making chess attractive and less intimidating for even the youngest and newest of students. They were so impressed that they sponsored us and gave us a first-class tour of their facility in New York; and interviewed our company for Black history month.
