Sunset Martin is a motivated and mature 17-year-old member of our Academy. She began playing chess at FMCA in 2023 as a scholarship recipient and then joined her high school chess club. Since then, she has been a steady member of our Friday Night League and attended many of our tournaments. Sunset’s rating has increased … in a few short years. Sunset acknowledges the many life lessons she has learned, and benefits gained from regularly playing chess.

In December 2025 she was selected as a Posse Scholar for Rutgers University–New Brunswick. After a rigorous recruitment process, demonstrating positive team skills, a thirst for learning, and a commitment to making a difference both in her own life and in her community, Sunset, out of over 1,000 high school leaders, was one of ten selected to win a full-tuition, four-year scholarship to Rutgers University–New Brunswick worth over $250,000. Sunset credits this achievement to her dedication to her school studies and her playing chess to strategic thinking skills. Sunset is currently taking college-credit classes while in high school at …. Her goal is to pursue a medical research career.

Sunset is a person we can always count on to represent FMCA at external events and promotions, ready to play, teach others and show the value to chess. We are so proud of Sunset’s accomplishments in life and in our Academy!
